Top 10 things to do in Milan

11 July 2010 No Comment

A bustling Italian city of banking, business and fashion, Milan may not be travelers’ first choice, yet it has its own charms. Here are the top 10 things to do in Milan:

1. See the city from the Duomo. A trip to the roof of this cathedral church is free and available via the elevator.

2. See Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Last Supper”. It’s in the Santa Maria delle Grazie church, but tickets are difficult to obtain as visitors are limited, so plan well ahead.

3. Spin on the Bull’s Balls. A tradition persists that spinning on the bull’s testicles on the central tile floor in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II would bring good luck.

4. Visit the La Scala Museum. Tickets to the opera are hard to get, but a museum visit includes a look at the theater.

5. Window shop in Italy’s fashion capital. Few mortals can afford the likes of Prada, Armani, Versace, and Valentino, but there’s no charge to look in the shops.

6. See an Italian soccer game. Milan has two soccer teams, AC Milan and FC Internazionale (Inter), giving tourists double the chance of cheering a home team game at San Siro stadium.

7. Visit a world-class art museum. The Pinacoteca di Brera impresses with masterpieces by Caravaggio, Raphael, Tintoretto Rembrandt, Hayez, and Mantegna.

8. Enjoy Milan’s parks. It’s a blessed break from the urban bustle. Try Parco Sempione, near Castello Sforzesco, or the Giardini Pubblici northeast of the city center.

9. Eat a Panzerotto. This is Italian fast food at about 3 euros each. It’s slightly sweet, spongy flat bread is layered with mozzarella and tomato sauce, then folded in half and deep fried.

10. Discover Milan’s canals. Yes, Milan has canals – two of them, in the Navigli district now known as an artist’s haven and a center of nightlife.
