Things to do in Milan
While some may consider Milan a workaday city of business and banking, its rank as Italy’s fashion center gives it some cachet, as do its cultural pinnacles such as La Scala Opera and Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic “Last Supper” fresco. Here are some of the top things to do in Milan:
See the Cathedral known as the Duomo. The word “duomo” is actually a generic Italian term for a cathedral church (Florence has one, too). But Milan’s is no slouch and is a popular spot for taking pictures with the doves. Beware those who offer to take your photo; they expect 5 to 6 euros in exchange. Bring your own corn seeds instead. And be sure to visit the roof; the view may be obscured by smog, but seeing the church spires up close is worth the trip.
See Leonardo’s fresco “The Last Supper”. Visits are limited in order to protect the painting on plaster, so plan well in advance.
Visit La Triennale Museum. The “Triennale” showcases modern decorative and industrial arts. Its mission is to encourage ongoing relationships between applied arts and industry.
Walk the Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II. This extravagant barrel-vaulted and glass-topped tunnel was created in the 19th century and now serves as a lively, noisy and colorful shopping mall. Many bars and restaurants make this a prime place for people watching.
Stroll around the Castello Sforzesco. Restoration of this 15th century castle was completed in 2005.
Visit San Siro stadium. Known officially as the Guiseppe Meazza, home to AC Milan and Inter Milan. This is the place to see when tired of fashion and art. Even the craziest soccer fans will learn something.
